The University Hospital Basel (USB) provides healthcare services as well as clinical teaching and research and is an important location factor for the regional life sciences sector. The existing building structures - in particular the buildings of the so-called third construction phase such as Clinic 2 - no longer meet the requirements of a contemporary and modern hospital.

The “Campus Health Master Plan University Hospital Basel” approved in 2011 laid the foundations for long-term spatial planning and defined the framework conditions for the next construction and renovation phases.

Clinic 2 is to be replaced in two phases by 2038.
