The Kliniken der Stadt Köln gGmbH company owns the children’s hospital Amsterdamer Strasse, one of the largest of its kind in Germany. The basic building fabric dates back to the 1960s and was supplemented by an annex in the early 1990s. Renovations have been carried out since then, but no conversions or refurbishments. Most wards are no longer state-of-the-art. The shortcomings in terms of hygiene – and, most importantly, functionality – will be remedied by the new annex. Dubbed the F-wing, it will include infant wards with parent-and-child rooms, and expanded intensive care facilities. The new wing will be built with the hospital in full operation. This results in a special challenge as the hospital’s entire energy supply will be switched over as part of the construction measures.
