In 2020, we marked 50 years of Drees & Sommer with the award-winning film, called “the blue way.” Inspired by our purpose, it follows a young woman shaping a future worth living. “Sometimes, you just put a sheet of paper in front of you and imagine all that is beautiful.”
The Story Behind Our Purpose
In the early 1970s, sustainability was not yet popular. We pursued it anyway.
We developed our approach early and named it “the blue way.” For us, blue is the color of sustainability, responsibility, and measurable impact.
Our Project Purpose: PlusEnergy and Cradle to Cradle®
In 1986, we developed a mathematical model to simulate building energy consumption. In 1992, we created the eco-management system for Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. The system reduced energy consumption, carbon emissions, and resource use.
Twenty years later, the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB) certified Potsdamer Platz as Germany’s first silver living quarter.
Our administration building achieved DGNB Gold for New Construction in 2009, ten years after its completion. In 2021, we opened our PlusEnergy building OWP 12. It generates more energy than it consumes through geothermal energy, air-source heat, and photovoltaics.
We design recyclable products using Cradle to Cradle® principles. Our products can be easily dismantled and reused while maintaining the same quality.
We apply these principles to buildings and interiors to avoid waste. We were the first to establish Cradle to Cradle® principles in construction.
At EXPO REAL, our exhibition booth aligned with Cradle to Cradle® principles and produced no waste.
