New construction of the Emanuel School in Cologne
City of Cologne, Building Management
Cologne, Germany
Drei Architekten, Stuttgart
November 2019 – April 2022
The new Emanuel School replaces an existing school site in the Cologne-Rodenkirchen district. The five-form entry elementary school with a double gymnasium consists of three sections. Continuous atriums in the interior, fitted with a large skylight dome, bring plenty of natural light into the buildings. A warm and appealing color scheme creates a high quality of stay. A canteen and an auditorium with a small stage form the heart of the school. A spacious and striking staircase leads to the upper floor. Learning takes place not only in the classrooms, but also in open learning areas.
The entire new building was constructed using energy-efficient construction methods in accordance with the Energy Saving Ordinance (EneV) 2016. It was equipped with a ventilation system with heat recovery. The photovoltaic systems on the sports hall and the school itself ensure further energy optimization and thus climate protection. Solar control glazing, external blinds and motorized window sashes for night ventilation provide thermal insulation in summer.
