Where coal once powered the past, BMW now drives the future. BMW’s Future Mobility Development Center has reshaped a former mining region into a beacon of automotive innovation. Situated in Sokolov in the northwestern part of the Czech Republic, it is BMW’s largest test site globally, spanning over 600 hectares, with an operational area exceeding 500 hectares.

This groundbreaking facility is the first of its kind in central Europe, playing a vital role in BMW’s future mobility development. It features 25 kilometers of advanced test roads and a building area of 10,800 square meters, specifically designed to test highly and fully automated driving and parking systems under real-world conditions, supplementing virtual driving simulations. The FMDC complements BMW’s existing test sites in Aschheim near Munich, Miramas in France, and Arjeplog in Sweden, solidifying its position as a global leader in automotive testing and innovation.

Driving Progress with Environmental Responsibility at the Core

The center reflects BMW’s commitment to sustainability by integrating green electricity and an innovative water management system that collects and reuses rainwater for track irrigation. Additionally, environmental protection and the promotion of local biodiversity were key priorities throughout the planning and construction phases.

Drees & Sommer played a pivotal role in the project's success by delivering expert project management for both construction and technology scopes within an international environment. The implementation of LEAN construction management optimized processes, improved technical quality assurance, and ensured adherence to the ambitious timeline. Additionally, the consulting company managed environmental and ecological aspects while offering specialized advice on geotechnical and geological topics, further contributing to the project's sustainability and precision.
