Germany’s first hydrogen-capable gas-fired power station was built on the site of the former Ernst Thälmann power station. The Drees & Sommer team took on the project management and was able to complete the new building in just over three years. The Leipzig Süd combined heat and power plant consists of a power plant and supply building, the pump hall, and a heat storage facility. An attractive and environmentally high-quality façade and open space design rounds off the new location concept. As one of the world’s lowest-emission gas turbine power plants, it is well below the statutory air pollution limits and is equipped to efficiently burn green hydrogen in the future. This makes it possible to switch completely to renewable energies. In addition, there is a high-quality furnishing concept for the control room and the visitor center. 

Stadtwerke established the “New Generation” department to realize the largest project in years, and the lead project is HKW Süd. Drees & Sommer supported the department in setting up and implementing the project with regard to reporting to the management. Despite time-critical processes, the specialists contributed their services to the timely grid connection and commissioning in 2022. Stakeholders were closely supported to ensure successful project implementation and trouble-free operation. In the power plant and on the premises, provisions were made to efficiently utilize additional low-calorie waste heat potentials of the power plant in the future.
