The Riederwald Tunnel  is the  largest inner-city construction project of the federal  motorway company Autobahn GmbH in Hessen. It forms  the  centerpiece between  the  current end of  the A66 motorway and the Frankfurt A661 eastern  bypass. The missing  motorway section is 2.2 km long, 1.1 km of which  runs in a tunnel under  the Riederwald district in the ‘Am Erlenbruch’ road  corridor.

In addition  to  the future Erlenbruch motorway junction, the  construction project also includes  the redesign of the  ‘Am Erlenbruch’ road  area. New roads, urban railways, footpaths, and cycle paths, as  well  as extensive green spaces, are  being  created  here.

The tunnel structure consists of  two approximately 1.1 km long  tunnel  tubes. These are  being built in various  tunnel docks  with  watertight excavation pits  through  the groundwater. Various  bridge  structures are required in the  area  of  the new Borsigallee junction and the new Erlenbruch motorway junction. In addition, a greenbridge will be realized.

Completion of  the motorway will create an efficient link between  the  eastern  outskirts and the city  of Frankfurt. The traffic  density in the Riederwald district will be  reduced  by 36% - from around 22,200 vehicles per day to 14,200. This will significantly reduce permanent congestion, noise, and air  pollution.
