Munich, Germany, 23 November 2021. Living space today must be many things: accommodation, office, a sociable place for feeling at ease. The micro-apartments at Flair Schwabing in the German city of Munich offer all this in a small space – and look really good, too. The design by the Drees & Sommer UX team has now won the prestigious German Design Award in the Excellent Architecture – Interior Architecture category.
For the German Design Award, an international jury from business, science and design recognizes pioneering projects from the German and international design industry in the architecture, communication design and product design categories. The annual event is one of the most prestigious of its kind in the world. It celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. The award is presented by the German Design Council, with more than 300 members. The ceremony honoring the award winners will be held in February 2022.
Variety in a Small Space
The architectural style of the Munich residential complex Flair Schwabing impressed the jury with its timeless design and well-thought-out layout. “With our project we are implementing a completely new quality of micro-living. Flair Schwabing reflects our attitude towards quality, which we pursue in all projects, ”says Klaus Laminet, Managing Partner of Investa Holding GmbH. “We are delighted to receive this special recognition and to see our user-centered design being appreciated in light of the increasing demands placed on residential buildings”, said Giulio Castegini, Associate Partner at Drees & Sommer SE. Starting in 2015, the team headed by the Associate Partner supervised Investa Real Estate's residential construction project from Drees & Sommer’s Frankfurt am Main office. It developed the brand architecture and interior design of the 84 micro-apartments, including all special areas such as entrances and access areas, until completion in 2020/2021. While Drees & Sommer was responsible for the interior design, the architectural team from dreisterneplus Architektur+Stadtplanung (formerly Meili, Peter Architekten München) was responsible for the building design.
It is not only the high quality of the design that sets the micro-residential building apart, but also the way it takes user requirements into consideration. On seven floors, these micro-apartments for temporary use offer a wide variety of living space for a target group comprising young professionals, business tenants and students. This diversity is reflected in five different apartment types. "The demands of our time are reflected in new needs for living space. It is essential to take these into account in the design, but without making concessions elsewhere. Because living at a temporary location doesn't mean you shouldn't feel at home,’ commented Giulio Castegini.
All Needs Are Met
The residential units lack nothing in their 26 to 108 square meters. From a large bed and a bathtub to a fully equipped kitchenette and space for working, residents enjoy a complete range of facilities that does not feel like space-saving, thanks to the creative work of the Drees & Sommer UX design team. There is literally nothing to get in the way of a meal with friends, while a small balcony lets you relax in the city. Wi-Fi, a virtual concierge, cleaning service and housekeeping are available to all residents throughout the building.
